MARTINSVILLE, Va. - April 18, 2016 - Susan G. Komen Virginia Blue Ridge has awarded a $50,687.00 grant to Martinsville-Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness to enhance local breast health education and services as well as to expand their community outreach into Patrick County, where no mammography facilities exist.

At the Martinsville-Henry County Coalition for Health and Wellness, the grant from Komen will support their Ladies First program, an initiative to provide screening mammograms for local, uninsured women who meet certain income guidelines. The program will involve a variety of community outreach activities and provide breast health education.

Susan G. Komen is the world's largest breast cancer organization, and Komen Virginia Blue Ridge is one of over a hundred Affiliates on the front lines dedicated to ending breast cancer in their communities. Komen Affiliates fund innovative breast health programs that provide vitally needed breast cancer screening, medical supplies, financial assistance (including emergency living expenses and insurance co-pays), as well as patient and family support.

"At Komen Virginia Blue Ridge, we conducted a needs assessment of our community and discovered that an estimated 172 women and men residing in our 31 city/county region will die from breast cancer this year," said Catherine Turner, Executive Director. "We are confident that through Ladies First, women in Martinsville and Henry County, and now Patrick County, will have access to the care they need."

"We are very excited to continue our mission of educating and providing access to breast health services in our local community through our Ladies First program and continue providing access to screening mammograms for local, uninsured women in our community as well as expanding our mission and strong efforts into the community of Patrick County," said the Coalition's Health Connect Director, Suellyn Danter.
