Bassett, VA - August 10, 2016 - During National Health Center Week, Bassett Family Practice is joining community health centers and health advocates on the national campaign to raise public awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America's Health Center over the course of more than five decades. This year's theme for National Health Center Week 2016 (NHCW) is "Celebrating America's Health Centers: Innovators in Community Health". To celebrate, Bassett Family Practice is hosting their Second Annual Open House event, which will be free and open to the public.

One of the bright spots in America's healthcare system, health centers started over 50 years ago as a pilot project during President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty. Today, they have compiled a significant record of success that includes:

• Producing $24 billion in annual health system savings
• Reducing unnecessary hospitalizations and unnecessary visits to the emergency room
• Treating patients for a fraction of the average cost of one emergency room visit
• Maintaining patient satisfaction levels of nearly 100 percent
• Generating $26.5 billion in economic activity and over 230,000 jobs

Health centers not only prevent illness and foster wellness in the most challenging populations; they also produce innovative solutions to the most pressing healthcare issues in their communities, some of which include nutrition education, translation services, care coordination and case management and a sliding fee scale. Community health centers tailor the services they provide to meet the specific needs of their communities.

There are NHCW events scheduled across the country, including health fairs, Open Houses, visits by Members of Congress and state officials to local health centers, press conferences, back-to-school drives, community breakfasts, patient appreciation events, free health screenings and dental cleanings, and much more.

"We are very excited to open our doors to the community for our Open House, so that we can educate individuals about the health care services that we offer, along with solutions to barriers they may be facing that prevents them from receiving the care they need as part of their overall health and wellness", said Sarah Bowman, Practice Manager.

In addition to educational materials, there will also be free health screenings and tours of the facility offered, the opportunity to get up close to a police car, a firetruck, an ambulance and the Martinsville Speedway Pace Car, a Teddy Bear Clinic for children to bring their own teddy bear to for an exam, face painting, refreshments provided by Subway and Walgreens and MORE!
