Early Childhood Programs
Virginia Department of Health Monthly WIC Nutrition Program
This is a nutrition program that features a fresh fruit or vegetable each month. WIC participants are given a monthly voucher for fresh produce. The Coalition program provides samples of a featured food along with recipes, nutrition facts, and children's activities. The Virginia Cooperative Extension and Smart Beginnings of Martinsville and Henry County also contribute to this program with information and class offerings for parents and children.
LEAP (Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Preschoolers)
A health program offered to the Henry County Schools Preschool Program and Clearview Early Learning Center for Martinsville City Schools. Each month a book is read to the preschool classes that focus on a health or nutrition topic. The children sample a food, and/or have a craft and activity that reinforces the lesson. A newsletter is sent home after each session that informs the parents/guardians of the lesson that day and has information, recipes, games, and activities to do at home.
Healthy Toolkits & Ages and Stages Developmental Screening
The parents/guardians of Bassett Family Practice patients aged birth to five years are given Healthy Toolkits at every well child checkup. The Toolkits contain age appropriate health and nutrition information in addition to immunization, safety, literacy, and developmental milestone information. Ages and Stages Developmental Screening is offered to patients at BFP. Parents can request the free screening, and it can be provided by the Coalition and/or Smart Beginnings of M-HC.
