Healthy Community Initiative Data
Nearly 700 children, kindergarten through 8th grade, participated in the Healthy Community Initiative (HCI) Afterschool Program from September 2004 to June 2005. Based on HCI health screening data collected in September and October 2004:
- 40% of boys in the HCI program are overweight or obese.
- 45% of girls in the HCI program are overweight or obese.
Children who weigh more have higher blood pressures:
- Blood pressure for children at normal weight: 100/66
- Blood pressure for children who are overweight: 104/69
- Blood pressure for children who are obese: 107/72
